A few years ago, I was asked by designer Fuchsia Lin to photograph a series of amazing dresses she’d completed. Fuchsia asked Oregon Ballet Theater dancer Grace Shibley to model for us, and we had a great time working together. Not only is Grace a beautiful young lady, and an amazing dancer, but she truly is a delight to work with. She does her name justice.
Fast forward to six weeks ago, when I was contacted by Katy Haley, of Bridal Bliss, asking if I’d like to photograph Grace’s wedding. Of course, I said yes. I couldn’t have been more excited.
Grace and Paul are one of those couples that you can tell, just from a few minutes with them, how much they enjoy each other’s company. Whether they’re perusing paintings in the Portland Art Museum, or planning a wedding, or making goofy faces, it’s obvious how much fun they have together. So it was especially enjoyable to celebrate their marriage together with them, and to photograph it!
Grace’s bridesmaids were her childhood friends–they’ve known each other since kindergarten. They made a ride in the double decker bus into a serious dance party.
What could be more appropriate than to photograph a ballerina next to a Degas painting? Paul arranged to have their first look in the Portland Art Museum, in the Mark building, named after his grandparents. We spent some time photographing them along with some of the artwork his grandparents have donated to the museum over the years, including this Severin Roesen, below.
Talk about goofy. As we were photographing the wedding party outside of the Portland Art Museum, I noticed a gentleman standing nearby, holding a clown wig. We asked to borrow it, and he agreed. And Paul made pretty good use of it.
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful old buildings in Portland, inside and out. Grace and Paul asked if we could re-create their engagement photo, at the steps of one of the amazing red doors.
After the ceremony and reception at Trinity, the wedding party gathered at Zupan’s Cellar for an intimate dinner. Decorated it as if it were a summer garden party, it truly was the perfect finish to a beautiful day, surrounded by friends and family.
Grace and Paul, it’s been an absolute delight and honor to tell your wedding story. Thank you, and congratulations!
