You don’t have to suffer to be a poet; adolescence is enough suffering for anyone.

~John Ciardi

Adolescents are often discounted by society as ‘pre-people.’  But when given the opportunity to express themselves, their inventiveness, humor, and pathos–in costume and word–is both delightful and moving.  Their meditations on death, relationships, adulthood, home life, and school, are insightful and entertaining, when given voice in these portraits by artist Fritz Liedtke.

CameraWork Gallery is the oldest fine art photography gallery in the United States, which has exhibited shows continuously since 1970.
